以下に実例をあげて、パラグラフの構成を説明する。 In Japan it is not unusual for parents to pay most of the living costs for their children until they graduate from university and start to work. Yet although their rent, food and tuition are paid, many students still insist on getting part time jobs, failing to see the opportunities that a work-free student life affords them. For example, students can spend their free time learning or researching topics of interest beyond their general education. One student I know has been studying English in a conversation school, while two others belong to an archeology club and recently came back from a dig. University is usually our last opportunity to study, and so it is a shame to waste a lot of time doing part-time work unnecessarily. このパラグラフは全部で５つの文からなっている。１つめが、このパラグラフで述べたいテーマの規定文である。つぎに、その内容を説明する文で受けている。３番目と４番目の文は、テーマを補強するための例示である。そして最後の文で、もう一度主張を繰り返している。 このように、そのパラグラフによって主張したいことを最初に明確に書き、次にそれを説明・補強し、最後に繰り返す感じで締めくくるという形式が、通常よくみられる。
